The pair clashed after the All Blacks knocked Ireland out of the 2023 Rugby World Cup at the quarterfinal stage, and Sexton, who played 118 Tests for Ireland between 2009 and 2023 and six for the British & Irish Lions, responded to Ioane's barbs when releasing his autobiography.

The Leinster stalwart played 189 times for the province, as well as having a 40-game stint for Racing 92.

He told the Irish Mirror his thoughts on Ioane's scheduled arrival for the remainder of the season with Leinster.

"One of the biggest influences on Leinster has been foreign players, getting the right people in, and the right players, but first and foremost, good people.

"When you consider the people that we've had over the years, like Isa Nacewa – the impact that he had, I can only speak about me, but the impact he had on me, Brad Thorn too.

"The impact they've had on the environment and the values, and all those types of things [have been] massive.

"From what I hear, Jordie Barrett [was] the same.

"It's a big responsibility he's [Ioane] got, and he's got to follow some pretty special people and characters before him.

"But I've nothing to do with Leinster anymore, it's nothing to do with me."

However, Sexton's contract with the Irish Rugby Union means he works with kickers from each of its four provinces and will have regular contact with Leinster.

It is a move Sexton thought he would never make.

"I planned to create a new me and do all the things that I had set out to do. For lots of different reasons, I ended up back here.

"They say you should never tell anyone your plans; that is probably for those reasons.

I suppose the part-time stuff, having a bit of separation from the group for over a year, and then coming back in gradually and seeing the environment and what I could add, it all stacked up.

"I don't know if this is going to be forever, but for the next two years it'll be my job and I'm looking forward to it."
