Hailing from Rangiora, north of Christchurch, Fletcher Newell attended Rangiora High School and now studies at Lincoln University. Recognised early for his strength and technical ability, he was selected for the New Zealand Under-20 team in his first year out of school.

A standout during Canterbury’s 2019 Under-19 campaign, Newell quickly earned a reputation as a powerful scrummager with an exceptional work rate. Then-Crusaders Head Coach Scott Robertson highlighted his strength and commitment, noting his record-breaking 255kg squat and relentless energy on the field.

Newell made his Crusaders debut on 28 February 2021 and has since established himself as one of New Zealand rugby’s most promising young props. Combining raw power, scrummaging prowess, and athleticism around the park, he is viewed as a key part of the future All Blacks front row.
