The 21-Test 2.02m and 124kg lock said he was excited to have the chance to play for the Hurricanes.

"I'm looking forward to continuing to grow as a player and giving everything I have for the jersey."

Hurricanes coach Clark Laidlaw was delighted in signing a Test lock.

"He's a young Kiwi who's plying his trade in Japan. His family moved up there, he's qualified for Japan, and he's taking a sabbatical from Toshiba. He had a lot of interest, not just in New Zealand but worldwide, so it was exciting for him to join the Hurricanes.

"Warner has family ties to the Hurricanes region – his sisters live in Wellington, his mum's the chief executive of Wairarapa Bush Rugby Football Union, his dad has been involved with Hawke's Bay in the NPC – so there's a lot of connection.

"We're looking forward to welcoming him when he comes after the November Tests. He's an exceptional athlete. He's got a good set piece, particularly at the lineout and around the field, so he can add to our game.

"Warner's also experienced around the world, in Japan and international rugby, so he'll be valuable as we build the team towards next season."

Moana Pasifika has extended No8 Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa's contract until the end of the 2027 season.

Ta'eiloa, 21, thrived in his first season of Super Rugby after making an impression with Southland in the Bunnings NPC last year.

He was awarded Moana Pasifika's Rookie of the Year after making the most carries across the competition with 205. He joined them as a replacement player before securing a regular starting place alongside captain Ardie Savea and Miracle Faiilagi in the loose forwards.

Te'eiloa said securing a contract meant a lot to him and was a dream come true for him and his family.

Born in Mangere, he first moved south to Dunedin, where he attended Otago Boys' High School and made the 1st XV. Southland first selected him in 2023.

After joining Moana Pasifika for a pre-season training opportunity, his high work rate resulted in his debut in round one against the Force, adding to his impact by scoring a try when coming off the bench.

He played 13 games and 943 minutes, the most of the Moana Pasifika side.

Coach Fa'alogo Tana Umaga said: "We're very happy to have Semisi back with us for another two years. He's a rare talent with amazing ambition and tenacity to get to where he is now.

"He impressed us from the way he came in and earned his spot on the team, the physicality he plays with and his love for the team. The future is bright for Semisi, and we look forward to continuing to watch him grow."
