Ethan de Groot is a formidable loosehead prop whose rise from Southland’s grassroots to the international stage has been marked by hard work, consistency and loyalty. He attended Southland Boys’ High School and progressed through the Southland Rugby Academy before making his provincial debut in 2018. He joined the Highlanders in Super Rugby in 2020 and immediately began making his presence felt in their front row.
After earning his first Test cap for the All Blacks in 2021, he soon became a regular starter known for his powerful scrummaging and work rate around the field. In 2023 he featured in the Rugby World Cup squad, starting in key knockout matches.
A proud Southlander, de Groot has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby, the Highlanders and Southland through to 2027, signalling his intention to continue growing as a leader in the loosehead role and long-serving contributor to his region.
