Loose forward Devan Flanders said Barrett would be a significant loss for them, but they would move on and try to play the way they want without him, and for the Hurricanes, nothing changed.
Flanders said the Hurricanes' process was to set weekly goals and not look too far forward.
"It's the Crusaders' first home game this year, and they haven't started how they wanted to, but we're not planning to let them get an easy win.
"They will be just a little desperate – 0 and three.
"We know it's going to be a physical game. We know they love their set-piece and their season hasn't gone the way they wanted to so far, so they'll be looking to turn it around against us."
Flanders is keen to be able to participate, having expected to take longer to recover from a shoulder injury.
"I've only played about 40 minutes this season, so I'm excited to get a start."
There is a lot of competition among the Hurricanes' loose forwards.
"There are young boys stepping up and older boys coming back, and I suppose you just have to stamp your mark on Friday and do your best to put your name in the starting XV.
"I'm lucky enough to have had a couple of wins down there, and it's always a big day on our calendar when playing the Crusaders in Christchurch. We're looking forward to it."
