His appointment comes after Schmidt earlier announced that Brumbies veteran coach Laurie Fisher was also joining the Australia coaching group.

Cron worked with All Blacks head coaches Graham Henry and Steve Hansen for more than 200 Tests. Since 2021, he has been a set-piece consultant for World Rugby. He also worked with Wayne Smith in preparing the Black Ferns for their 2022 Women's Rugby World Cup triumph.

At last year's Rugby World Cup, he was worked with the referees and was the only coach in their group. He was able to discuss with the referees' a coaches view on lineouts, rucks or tackles.

He told rugby.com.au, "I stayed with the referees in the hotel so we could go for a cup of coffee and a chat. I think we made real progress."

So well did he do in his scrum work with the All Blacks that he became known as 'the scrum doctor.'

He summed up his scrum coaching philosophy on the Rugby Bricks podcast, "There're two most important things for scrummaging. All you're trying to do is get eight people to work in the same direction at the same time, and you're trying to get eight people to have the ability to stay strong with movement."
