Exclusive Access: NZR+ Launches Intimate Look at Black Ferns' 2025 Campaign

Untitled 1 v6

Behind the Fern premieres Friday 16 May at 6pm on NZR+ and YouTube, offering unprecedented access to the players, coaches and staff, as well as behind-the-scenes moments that define the Black Ferns’ world-class culture and commitment. From challenging training sessions, the fun and comradery between players, to emotional team talks, the series captures the joy, spirit, and drive of the reigning world champions.

“This is the most personal and open we’ve ever been on camera,” said Black Ferns Director of Performance Allan Bunting. “Fans will see us and the pride that comes with wearing the black jersey. They will see that for the team it's not just about rugby — it’s about identity, connection, and the journey we’re on together.”

The series highlights the team’s preparation both on and off the field, showcasing not just their physical strength, but also their deep sense of purpose and unity as they aim for glory on the world stage once again.

Episode 1 is called Courage First and gives insights into the first team camp, and the selections for the PAC4 Game 1 in Newcastle Australia last weekend.

Kerry McKenzie, GM of Brand and Marketing says the opportunity to share more about the Black Ferns in such an important year was a strategic choice for New Zealand Rugby’s NZR+ platform.

“This is a pinnacle year for our sport, and one of our key drivers for the series is supporting the growth of the women's game. We also know rugby fans want to see what happens off the field as well as on it, and Behind the Fern showcases everything that happens as the team comes together to defend their world title. Our fans want more transparency, so this isn’t just showing the ‘good’ and the fun, though there is plenty of that. This series also shows the tough choices being made by coaches and staff, and the range of emotions that go into being part of global high-performance sports.”

Whether you're a lifelong fan or new to the game, Behind the Fern offers an inspiring glimpse into the heart of a team that represents far more than just sport.

Don’t miss the premiere tonight at 6pm, on NZR+ and YouTube.
