Savea's Stand: 'I'll Run Through Brick Walls for This Team'

Moana Pasifika coach Tana Umaga

"We just stuck to the plan. We had a lot of belief this week. We knew these last three games were going to be tough for us, but our leadership group stepped up and led through the week. Our guys have grown from the start of the season to now, and they'll grow again. But we have got to keep growing.

"We heard a lot of things after our last game and Ardie [Savea] and I talked about how we motivated ourselves. We didn't need to because they're [critics] writing it for us. We heard some of the narratives coming out of their camp but Ardie said we just had to look to the light."

Regarding captain Ardie Savea's performance

"I don't know how anyone can bet any better, but he keeps doing it, and it is amazing what he puts himself through, how he prepares and how much it means to him.

"He's impressed upon them [the team] that what they are doing here means something, and it's the 'doing' part that we'll be judged on. Now our players are starting to understand that's what's required.

"Where our players have come from, this is the opportunity for them for a lifetime. It's life changing. Learning the skills of someone that's playing the best rugby that anyone's seen. It's not just luck, that's the best way for our boys to learn."

On hat-trick try scorer Kyren Taumoefolau

"He's great. He's a young man, a great story coming from Nelson, and not making his squads. All of a sudden, this is the greatness of what we can provide for our players through that pathway.

"We're very proud of Kyren as well as all the players we have. There are a lot more that have come through that pathway as well. It's finding something they believe in and to make some changes in their lives because a lot of them have had to make some big changes."

Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea

"I'm proud, more so for the team, the boys, and the franchise. We haven't been in this position before. We're going into uncharted areas. It's installing belief and a bit of faith within our team that they're as good as some amazing teams in Super Rugby.

"We talked about rugby dying in New Zealand. If you look at that tonight, we were certainly alive, and that's a testament to the team, Tana, and everyone who's part of the franchise and doing great things for Moana and the game.

"When you wholeheartedly believe in something, you give it your all. That's me right now being with this team, with Tana alongside the brothers that you could say have come from nothing. They're certainly showing people they are something. So, for me, it's more than a game. And that's when I'll run through brick walls for them."

Savea on his final turnover

"To be honest, I heard the whistle go and I heard cheering, and I was hoping it wasn't me getting penalised until I felt the guys slap my back. We're really grateful we got the win.

"Coming into this team, I've learned so much about the brothers and how they do things. I've learned that you don't always need to be on edge.

"It's been an eye-opener for me because many teams I've been part of, if there's too much laughter and we don't play well, it's because of the laughter, and this team thrives on that. I'm slowly learning, and it's been amazing.

"It's the happiest I've been in my Super career."

Blues coach Vern Cotter

"It was frustrating when you finished five metres from the line and had an opportunity to win. I thought it was going to be our night where we'd get to win by one point.

"As it turned out, we didn't. We weren't efficient enough. That's disappointing.

"We felt, and we saw, we came up against a fresher team. One team was on its fifth game, and one had come off a bye, and we saw that in the collisions, where they had a bit more horsepower.

"We hung in but didn't have much ball at the beginning of the second half. We couldn't win the balls in the air, and were struggling on the ground and in those collisions. And a few things went against us; there were some reasonably tough calls out there.

"We had the opportunities; there were two at the start of the game. We have some questions around turning intent into action. A lot of that is around responsibility and staying locked in.

"But credit to Moana Pasifika, they played well. They had us under pressure.

"There's a bye, so we can recharge our batteries and then we're back home for a game against the Waratahs. That's the focus. We'll have a reset after this break and then have a fair crack at it."

Crusaders coach Rob Penney

"I'm proud of the boys, the effort they put in, and they got the rewards. It was pleasing. The Waratahs have been good all year at home.

"Everyone can beat everyone if you're just a wee bit off. We talked about that early in the week. Davey [Havili] and the leadership group made sure the focus was in the right areas, and they've done a great job and got reward for it.

"They [the Waratahs] were slightly off in the first half but came out steaming in the second. We took advantage of that, though. It's hard to say whether that was because of our abilities, that they couldn't get access to the game, but I wasn't surprised by our performance.

"We've got a quality side and are growing all the time. It's exciting to see it all unfold.

"James O'Connor is great value for us. He's awesome both on and off the part. He's committed to the Crusaders beautifully and the boys are committed to him."

Crusaders captain David Havili

"It was important for us to bounce back. If you look at history, the Crusaders haven't travelled well and played well in Sydney, so we wanted to acknowledge that. We had to come with the mindset they would be physical, and the start tonight helped us in that way, but I'm happy for our young boys who stepped in.

On James O'Connor

"From the first day I met him, he's been warm and welcoming, and he brings a lot of great energy, and was awesome for our young 10s [first five-eighths]. Taha Kemara is injured, but for the likes of Rivez [Reihana], having that calming influence around our team is great.

"He's been around the world, played in massive games, big stadiums and he knows what it's about, so it's great to have his experience."
