Assistant coach Clarke Dermody said the bye gave the side a chance to rest after eight challenging games before a testing finish that will show the side where it is in its development.
"We're starting away on a Friday, so it's a short week. It's about keeping our plan simple. We can see a different energy around the boys in training. So, we can take that through the week.
Dermody said while the 10th-placed Highlanders were not quite getting the results, there has been growth in the team this year.
"We've played some of our best rugby this year compared to last season.
"It's all we can ask. And now, we've got a good chance against three of the better teams in the competition to get it a real crack.
"Mathematically, we're still a chance. If we get it right then, if we're good enough, we can get into the playoffs."
Dermody said No8 and co-captain Hugh Renton won't be available as he has been suffering through a groin injury.
"He tried to battle through it, and then it got the better of him last pre-game on our last training. He's been with a specialist getting their advice, so he's out for the foreseeable future.
"It's important that he gets it right, so without putting a time on it, he won't be available this week."
Wing Caleb Tangitau has a similar injury.
"It's a shame, he started the season really well and was in everyone's eye line but, unfortunately, he won't be available this week."
However, returning from injury are backs Jonah Nareki and Taniela Telea.
Dermody said Sam Gilbert, who announced he would be heading overseas after the season, would be missed.
"He's the ultimate Highlanders' man. He came into the Bravehearts and stood out in one of those games. He caught the eye of Tony Brown and made every post a winner. He ended up as vice-captain last year and has played over 50 games.
"He's a real glue guy who can play anywhere in the backline bar halfback and maybe that was to his detriment as it didn't give him a chance to settle down in his favoured position. But that sums him up, he's a team guy who is able to spread himself wherever he's needed."
