Coach Scott Robertson said the situation did provide opportunities for players who deserved a chance, with halfback, front row and loose forwards being the main areas of need.
Flanker Simon Parker was one to gain an unexpected chance.
"He's a big man, been consistent all year. He got an ankle injury and then came straight back out in great condition. We like his accuracy. He's physical and intimidating.
"He came through the age groups and Under-20s, and showed a lot of promise and then was injured. He had two or three back-to-back injuries and couldn't quite get his rhythm. Then, in the last year or two got on the field and has been incredibly professional."
With halfbacks Cameron Roigard and Noah Hotham injured, but possibly available to play later in the Championship, cover has been brought in with Finlay Christie and Kyle Preston available.
"They're [Roigard and Hotham] hugely important to us, and we're trying to find any way we can to make it as quick as possible for them to return safely."
While at halfback Christie had experience, Preston had been in the selectors' sights last year, and he had been part of Wellington's NPC win.
"He's a great finisher. He was incredible in the Super Rugby Pacific final for the Crusaders, and that's what we need, potentially, in the next few games. Someone that's performed recently, especially with the great kicking game he's got, his hard work, and his speed of pass is bang on."
Robertson said Christie had played 23 Tests and been to a World Cup so that he could slot straight back in.
"That's where he wants to be, in the All Blacks. Every time we've had a conversation with him, he said, 'What else can I do better, and how can I improve to be back there?' And he's done everything we need and it's great to have him back in the team."
Prop Tevita Mafileo appealed because he could play on both sides of the front row.
"He's perfect for a touring party. We're pleased for him because he's just been there and worked at his craft and his opportunity has come."
Outside back and former Sevens player Leroy Carter has also been called in as cover, and was typical of others who come back to 15s.
"Through the season you saw how many line breaks he makes. How good is he at the breakdown, the covering tackles? Off the ball, he's tough. He could be probably the fastest in New Zealand. He's got a lot of positives and will be welcomed into the All Blacks."
Parker, Peter Lakai and Josh Lord will have another Bunnings NPC game at the weekend for their sides and will join the side in Argentina a little later.
Robertson said captain and lock Scott Barrett was in good condition ahead of the tour, and brother Beauden's hand has recovered, and he will be available for the first Test.
While Christian Lio-Willie performed well during the France series, Lakai had been injured late in Super Rugby, while Parker also emerged. The door was not closed for Lio-Willie, Robertson said.
