Taha Kemara’s Crusaders Dream Lives On Despite Season-Ending Injury

Kemara learned he had ruptured an ACL after scans this week and is set to have an operation and a lengthy rehabilitation before returning next season.

"I've talked to a few of the boys, Brayden Ennor, George Bower and Sevu Reece, who have gone through it recently and they've given me positive encouragement. Seeing the boys who have got it done before me, it's not the best thing to go through, but I'll come out the other side and be a better player and person."

Kemara said when the injury happened, he knew from the sharp pain he felt and the pop he heard that it was a bad injury.

His goal is to be back by the start of next season. But before then, he will not dwell on the injury while doing what is best for the side and helping them in the playoffs.

"I'll do whatever is best for the team, and whatever they need, I'll do it."

The injury occurred the same week he secured an extension on his contract until 2028.

Kemara said it had been a dream to have a professional rugby career, although achieving his goal while suffering an injury was bittersweet.

"But, to be in a franchise like this is a bonus. I love this team and love this city as well."

Kemara said that having a taste of Super Rugby action with the Crusaders this year, extending his time with the side was another goal.

"It's about getting better. We always had the conversations after every game with the coaches and there's always room for improvement for me."

Game understanding and how to drive a team as first five-eighths are still areas for him to develop.

"Skill set-wise, being able to nail consistent skills and my kicking game are massive areas to grow.

"When I get back on my feet, my kick skill set will be at the forefront of my mind. This year, it was up and down, which is probably not good for a first five-eighths.

"This injury's just a little pause in what I'm going to hopefully do in the future."

Signing until 2028 gave him and his family some security around staying in Christchurch, and his playing future was to work towards creating a legacy along with other younger players in the group.

"A core group of us have said we want to be long-term. There's been [another] core group that did seven [titles] in a row, so as a core young group, we want to take this franchise to higher places when our time comes.

"That's a motivation for me and for us as a franchise."
